ANYONE who knows me knows I like to play the “think it out to its logical conclusion” game a lot.
I was thinking about what might happen if everyone went organic (not just coffee).
First thing is crop yields might drop. Significantly.
Next would be a jump in prices because, of course, less supply means greater demand.
Higher prices would lead farmers to want to have more product to bring to market.
The need for more product would, necessarily, cause farmers to feel the need to clear more land.
More land cleared means less natural flora and fauna and less biodiversity.
Eventually demand for organics will peak, plateau, or possibly even decline again; but the amount of land under human cultivation will undoubtedly not shrink. This, many say, is not a good thing for coffee of the planet.
Just a train of thought that may have run off the tracks. Not original thoughts to me, for sure. But just my .02 pennies.
Your thoughts, please.
